There’s more here

Way back in 1996 this mysterious compilation CD of 60′s & 70′s “product music” showed up made by a very dodgy looking Japanese label. At the time it was just out of left field. No one heard or cared about music like this at the time because it was from a very square era.  But the music itself cut through the irony and distance and became a cult hit on places like WFMU.  Songs like “Dance The Slurp” and “Up Came Oil” just compel you to crack a goofy smile. “Hooray For Human Engineering” and “My Bathroom” bristle with wit and a surprising amount of social commentary.  The whole thing ends with one of my favorites, “The Eight Seasons Of Chromalox ” a 10-minute opus dedicated to air conditioning.  Honestly there’s not a bad song on this 20 track compilation.

This is the ultimate Mad Men accessory – perfect for screening parties or just listening on the bus. Oh, and you’re a person who hates life if you dislike this.

I wish I´ve never listened to Yellow Magic Orchestra : it´s so good the first time !! Anyway, remember them ? Co-founder (?) is our man : mister Haruomi Hosono, one of the weirdest guy ever !

I´ve found this cool track from him on Robots in heat, a really cool podcast lovefingers-style (R.I.P). It calls “Birthday party”, so I wanted to share it to you guys !

Belgian advertising illustrator Guy Peellaert was one of the first cartoonists to embrace Pop Art and incorporate Andy Warhol’s appropriation of mass market iconography into his work. His first comic, Les aventures de Jodelle, (Jodelle’s likeness based after yé-yé chanteuse Sylvie Vartan) appeared in 1966, swiftly followed by ‘Pravda la Survireuse’ (her visage modelled after Françoise Hardy) for the magazine ‘Hara-Kiri’ in 1967.
Peellaert recently art directed this animation, based on ‘Pravda’.

DJ Donna Summer did a mix for Mixtape Mondays on WeAreSkitzo.net just out today. Like last week’s mix by I.D., he wrote a really great comment for the mix:

I’ve been feeling quite literate lately and have been wanting to get off the footpath a bit of late, so while there’s def some good club tunes in this mix, be warned it gets pretty arty. And why not? Sure there are mixes that are made for pre/post parties, dancing with friends and what not, but mostly I suspect people listen to them on their iPods while walking around or at a pretty quiet volume while they work.  It’s a journey after all and maybe I have some story to tell.

As for the mix, it’s a bit of old and new with just a pinch of the random. It starts off with a collage of 3 tracks, 2 of them from the Sonic Youth side project Ciccone Youth and with a forthcoming new track on Nightshifters of one of our newest signings, Talk. From there it goes to a remix I made for Hostage, a great afro-pop influenced track by Débruit, and another young act, NuJax, but then I get tricky throwing in a vintage Autchre track into an absolutely bizarre Christian Martin track- Ghosts. The rave shows back up with Magnum, a pretty sped up Nero-funk track by Mux Mool, a little touch of an old Dat Politics track then pretty much the entire “Revolting Jocks” track by the JOTS boys. Killer. From there we go back to 1990 and the always awesome “Hello Teenage America” from Meat Beat Manifesto’s incredible album 99%.  We finish things off with another brand new producer, Distal from Atlanta, a touch of a freaked-out Morricone composition and then cap it off with the full version of “Tocatta” from Oslo’s Jaga Jazzist – a track that I always get lost in and also equally as inspired. – Jason Forrest aka DJ Donna Summer
