One of the awesome things about being an ex-pat is that you miss all the really horrible shit the US media shovels at you on a daily basis. But every so often, somehow, one tends to miss out on something really great. Yesterday I found out about my (JF) new favorite artist on the globe- Lil Mama!!! But even though she has been on a ton of blogs, was nominated for a Grammy for song of the year (for Lip Gloss, fuck yes!), is working with Dre, and is on Jive records, I’m not so sure people in EU really know her, so here’s a great article the Village Voice did on her. She’s super young (18), she’s from NYC, she’s trying to be a “positive roll model”, she’s funny as hell, and she writes her own lyrics. Her videos (G-slide, Lip Gloss- can’t embed them) are fucking killer, her raps are hard, awesome and somehow really “true”, and the music for her 2 hit singles is fucking KILLER! G-slide goes from nursery rhyme to evil ghetto hover shit! YES! If a 35 year old man can say this without going to jail: she’s my new hero!
